JUNE/JULY 2008 - SUMMER UPDATE
|
Also during the month of July the Los
Angeles Rod and Reel Club invited 20
DAPS to attend the 59th Annual Kid’s
Fishing Trip. The trip consisted of one
half day of fishing on the open ocean.
They provided all the necessary fishing
tackle, along with a wonderful all we
could eat hot dog and hamburger lunch,
made right on the boat. All of our DAPS
caught at least one fish, which the crew
cleaned and bagged for us to take
home. Each of the kid’s received a
trophy at the conclusion of the trip to
commemorate their fishing experience.
We had a great day on the water.
Thank you Los Angeles Rod and Reel club!
injury-related death in children. In 2007,
more than 1200 drowning deaths
occurred in the United States with
children younger than 20 years old. Not
long ago drowning was the second
leading cause of unintentional injury
deaths among US children between 1 and
19 years old.
As a way to help combat swimming
tragedies during the month of June and
July Pacific Area’s DAPS Program initiated
a swimming course with the help of the
Los Angeles Recreation and Parks. Our
DAPS Program started with 22 juveniles
from the age of 9 to 13 that could not
swim. After a five week course given by
Parks & Recreation in conjunction with
DAP’s Advisors (Officer Zalokar & Officer
Matthews) 18 DAP’s have learned to swim
this year. The Pacific Area Boosters
sponsored the entire swim program. The
four other juveniles have overcome their
fear of water and are only a few weeks
away from passing their swimming test.
Good job DAP’s!
